Global trends in green energy investment
With the steady increase of the number of companies, local governments and countries that are working on minimizing the greenhouse gas emission to realize low-carbon societies, the clean energy transition is rapidly advancing all over the world. 2018 was the fifth in a row in which investment exceeded the $300 billion mark.
Growing investments in both Solar and Wind Energy
Global clean energy investment totaled $332.1 billion in 2018, down 8% on 2017. 2018 was the fifth in a row in which investment exceeded the 300$ billion mark, according to authoritative figures from research company BloombergNEF (BNEF). Classified into the technologies, the largest investment energy sector was solar ($130.8 billion) followed by wind ($128.6 billion). Investment in biomass with waste-to-energy was $6.3 billion. Low carbon services and energy smart technologies (including smart grid, energy storage and energy saving electricity etc.) are recognized as well in BNEF’s energy investment analysis. Smart grid and energy storage are the technologies that are inevitable for accomplishing both the security/sustainability of front-of-meter and the further expansion of deployment of renewable energy such as PV.
